1/2 Hot - 1/2 Cold Tomato Soup

1/2 Hot – 1/2 Cold Tomato Soup

What is 1/2 hot – 1/2 cold tomato soup? The answer is straightforward; it is just plain tomato soup, where it differentiates though it is in preparation and the resulting tasting experience. Imagine having a soup that tastes hot and cold simultaneously. These conflicting temperatures will cause sensory confusion and curiosity, and it might take you a few seconds of indecision to process these unexpected flavour experiences. The aroma is also different from both sides of the dish, as the hot side will be more flavorful than the cold side, and the reason for that is the heat releases the aroma molecules trapped in the soup faster.

It is very important how this dish is served so that people can get the proper taste of it. The middle of the hot and cold parts has to point straight towards the patron. In that way, they can taste both sides/temperatures simultaneously.

I used regular store-bought soup for this recipe but recommend homemade one.

How to make Hot and Cold Tomato Soup

Prep Time 30 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Additional Time 2 minutes
Total Time 42 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 small can of soup
  • 1 cup of basil-infused water
  • 0.4% or 2.1 gr Agar

Instructions

  1. Basil water is made by boiling and adding 1/2 to 1 cup of basil leaves to infuse it.
  2. I kept the leaves in the water for 30 minutes before strained them.
  3. Mix the infused water and the Agar in a pot to dissolve them. Add the tomato soup and boil - a high temperature is necessary for gelling.
  4. It is similar to my other post using Agar for gelling.
  5. Once the boiling is done, put it aside to cool down and jellify.
  6. Put it in the fridge to bring it to a lower temperature.
  7. Once ready to serve, use a blender to liquefy the soup.
  8. Take half of the soup and warm it, or use a microwave; in my microwave, it takes 120 sec. to reach the desired temperature.
  9. Use a separator, spoon, utensil, or anything that will prevent the parts of the soup from mixing. Pour into a small soup cup or any other heatproof vessel.
  10. Remove the separator.

I served it accompanied by Parmesan ice cream.

Notes

You can add flavour to the soup using any of your favoured spices.
