gimlet

Gimlet (1890-1900)

Gimlet was very popular with the British Navy. To prevent scurvy, a severe and sometimes deadly disease caused by Vitamin C deficiency, they were given preserved lime juice, but no self-respected sailor would’ve drunk straight lime juice. It sure tastes much better if you add some gin to it.

In the 1923 book Harry’s ABC of Mixing Cocktails, the proportions are equal to Plymouth gin and lime juice stirred and served in a martini glass. Ice is optional.

People will probably find it a bit too sweet these days, so adjusting the ratio of 4:1 gin to lime will help reduce the sweetness.
