Old Fashioned (1850-1870)

Old Fashioned was created at the beginning of the Golden Age of the cocktail, mid to late -1870s and is still popular today.

At that time, different modifiers created new and exciting drinks.

It’s believed that the name Old-Fashioned is related to the old way the cocktails were made at the beginning of the century.

According to the definition of May 06, 1806, in The Balance and Columbian Repository (Hudson, New York, USA),

The cocktail “is a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters.”

That was the third and more detailed explanation of the word cocktail.

The word cocktail was first mentioned in England on March 20, 1798.
